Magen Avot and the United Synagogue

We are pleased to update you on our ongoing relationship with the United Synagogue (US) and how, in the next few weeks, we propose to begin the process of formally joining the US as a full constituent member synagogue.

We are extremely grateful to the US for having supported us both practically and financially with great generosity. We are also, of course, enormously appreciative of the magnificent support of Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis, whose presence and guidance has done so much to enhance our services on many occasions.

We have agreed with the US that over the next few months our leadership team will regularly meet with the US to work on a financial and strategic plan that will help us become self-sufficient within 2-3 years. Parallel to this we will be asking those of our supporters who would like to become members of Magen Avot to commence the process of joining Magen Avot/the US. This transition will prepare the ground for the development of the Magen Avot community. As part of this we will discuss the process for the future recruitment of a rabbi and rebbetzin and access to the US Burial Scheme.

With regard to the Burial Scheme, once Magen Avot have formally joined the US, for a period of three months only, members over the age of 40 will not have to pay the Burial Scheme entrance fee. This amnesty does not apply to former US members marked as defaulters. This also only applies to members who live within a 1.5 mile radius of our current location. In all cases the annual scheme fee (currently £71 per adult over the age of 21) will be payable. There is no Burial Scheme entrance fee for members under the age of 40.

It is important that everyone who wants to see our community thrive should take this opportunity to state their intent to join Magen Avot and the US. We are required to demonstrate to the US that we are able and eager to become a viable free-standing kehillah.

Please see a link below to a form which we would kindly ask you to complete. In order for the process to go ahead it is vital that these forms are completed and submitted.

Unfortunately, we are unable to offer membership to current members of Finchley United Synagogue, Hendon United Synagogue or Alei Tzion at this time, as the US has an 18 month moratorium in this regard. Nevertheless, we welcome members of these shuls continuing to daven with us and joining as members once the moratorium ends.

Thank you for being part of our journey so far; we very much hope you will want to join us in the next exciting stages.
